Model Train Feature
The new Big Boy 4-8-8-4 is the largest HO steam locomotive Trix has ever built, with a length of 18 5/16” and a weight of almost 2 1/2 pounds—the frame, boiler, tender body and tender frame are all metal.

Mechanically, the Big Boy is equipped with an Era III high-efficiency can motor with flywheel, articulating frame for negotiating sharp curves, and spring loaded, powered driving axles. A DCC decoder for generating steam sounds and handling specific functions is built in. For those who wish to add smoke, the Big Boy is factory-ready for the installation of optional Seuthe #8 smoke generators.
While the Big Boy can be used on curved track with a radius of as little as 14 3/16”, Marklin recommends larger radius curves, due to the overhang of the long boiler that could clip tunnel portals, signals or other trackside scenery if placed too close. The level of detail is high enough to satisfy even the pickiest modelers. Some of the eye-candy that can be applied after removing the Big Boy from the box include etched railings and grab irons, signs, piping and other appliances. An engineer and a fireman figure are also included for the cab. Even the packaging is well done—a wooden presentation box, with the locomotive mounted on a wooden base.
